I honestly couldn’t tell you which show I’m looking forward to the most between Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain and Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. What I can say, however, is that both of these shows have the potential to take small screen horror to the next level. From the word go, series creator John Logan was aiming for Penny Dreadful to be dark and terrifying while bringing to life some of literatures most classic characters. We now finally have our very first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated vampire series The Strain, from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It’s nice to finally catch a glimpse of the show despite the fact that it’s only a teaser. The source material is extremely dark which is exactly what this teaser points to as an eclipse blankets New York City in darkness, leaving only a disturbing message behind: He is hereContinue Reading…

I’m slightly behind the bend on this little bit of news, but better late than never as they say. It was announced a while back that Rosemary’s Baby was headed to the small screen for a mini-series adaptation through NBC, but what we didn’t know at the time was who would take on the iconic role of Rosemary Woodhouse. Well, folks, that has all changed as we now have our new Rosemary thanks to the talented Zoe Saldana (pictured) who has just recently been given the nod. Saldana will play Rosemary, the iconic young wife and would-be mother who, with her husband, moves into a Paris apartment that has a darkly storied past. After finally getting pregnant, she becomes increasingly suspicious that both her husband and their mysterious neighbors have ulterior motives about the future of her child. Continue Reading…

I’ve been keeping tabs on the small screen adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain since it was announced a while back, and now—many months later and an impressive cast all lined up—we finally have the show’s first official stills! The show is based on a trilogy that was written by both Del Toro and Hogan and it features not only a unique take on vampires, but blood suckers that are evil enough to make your skin crawl. One of the new stills gives us a look at the very moment in the story that sets everything in motion as the CDC discovers something horrifying on a plane. If you watched last night’s ridiculous mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, then there’s a good chance you witnessed a creepy commercial that AMC ran during the show. It was odd bit of found-footage featuring a swarm of rats gathering around a sewer drain and running through a government building, and it turns out that this could be the start of Guillermo del Toro’s viral campaign for his upcoming adaptation of The Strain which will hit FX in 2014. Is The Exorcist next for a TV adaptation?

Get ready for another one of our beloved horror films to head to the land of television. Right now it sounds like there’s heavy interest in getting a TV series based on William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist off the ground. Morgan Creek, who has the rights to the property, is currently shopping the idea around in hopes that it will get picked up by either cable or broadcast networks. While details are slim on the plot itself, we do know Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four reboot) is penning the adaptation that is said to be an all new take on the material — whatever that’s supposed to mean! They are still currently in the very early stages of development but don’t be surprised if you see this one land a deal shortly. Sam Mendes’ Penny Dreadful series finds a director

Ryan —  June 18, 2013 — Leave a comment

Things are finally starting to pick up for the Sam Mendes and John Logan produced Penny Dreadful series which is said to be of the of the psychosexual horror variety. The latest news to come out of Showtime’s upcoming series is that they have hired Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) to direct the first two episodes. This is fantastic news folks. Not only do they have one hell of a director in place, but they’ve got one who knows a thing or two about the horror genre and considering he’ll be responsible for some of horror’s most classic characters, I’d say that’s a pretty good thing. John Hurt to play Abraham Setrakian in The Strain

Ryan —  June 17, 2013 — 3 Comments

FX’s adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s horror novel The Strain has just added John Hurt to co-lead opposite Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro in the network’s high-profile drama pilot, reports Deadline.

Hurt is the final piece to the puzzle for the show as he’ll portray Professor Abraham Setrakian, a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers — if anyone will listen. The Strain was already shaping up quite nicely but now that they’ve landed Hurt to play Setrakian, I think it’s safe to say that we might just have one hell of a show on our hands. Continue Reading…

Time traveling serial killer series being adapted by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way?

Ryan —  May 31, 2013 — 1 Comment

Per THR, MRC and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way are teaming up to adapt The Shining Girls, written by Lauren Beukes and generating buzz as one of this summer’s must-reads. The two companies, however, are not aiming for a feature adaptation but rather intend to develop the project for television. It’s a wicked sounding novel that goes a little something like this: Continue Reading…
