Those of you who stick pretty close to Rhino’s Horror know what a roller coaster ride the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand has been lately as three directors have already dropped out before finally landing on The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone. Some great news has finally struck the project because not only does it look like Boone is actually going to be sticking around, but he says that it’s going to be a 3-hour long film and will be rated R. There’s a lot going for the new adaptation of Stephen King’s IT as we just learned that Warner Bros. has shifted the project to their New Line division, who hope to re-spark the studio with a focus on the horror genre. With an aim to deliver a two film adaptation of King’s classic novel and a director like True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga at the helm, I’d say this one is off to a fantastic start. But perhaps the most searing question surrounding the film has to be the big question mark on who is going to take on the iconic role of Pennywise, who was terrifyingly portrayed by Tim Curry in the 1990 miniseries. A prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining was first announced to be moving forward last April, and now we might have a face to attach to it as reports are coming in that Warner Bros. is looking to get Children of Men and Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron to take the helm of The Overlook Hotel. After his latest film, Gravity, grossed $716 million worldwide for the studio, it’s not at all surprising that they’d look to him to bring this project to life. But then again, I’m sure Cuaron is getting showered in projects right now as he’s even being considered to direct the Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Continue Reading…
It has been a long road for the re-adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, which recently saw its first shred of hope back in 2013 when True Detective‘s Cary Fukunaga took the helm. Now, in a rare turn of events, Warner Bros.—who has been developing the project for 5 years—has moved the project to their New Line division. According to THR, insiders say the siblings are drawing clearer distinctions about the types of movies they make. This is big news not just for IT but for horror in general. Continue Reading…
Mike Flanagan made some serious noise amongst the horror community back in April with the release of Oculus (read my review here), proving that he’s a horror director worth keeping an eye on. Now we’ll get to see the director take on one of the biggest voices the genre has to offer as he has been tapped to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game. Continue Reading…
I sure as shit hope so! If you haven’t been keeping count, here are the previous directors to recently fall out of adapting Stephen King’s classic novel to the big screen: David Yates, Ben Affleck and, of course, Scott Cooper have all fallen to the mighty story. Affleck dropped out for obvious reasons (to play Batman) and Cooper just couldn’t find a way to condense it into one single film so he ultimately left the project as well. Now, according to The Wrap, The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has just been given the go-ahead to attempt what no one else has been able to do—bring The Stand to the biggest of screens. And just like that a new director is being eyed to tackle the daunting task of brining Stephen King’s epic novel The Stand to life on the biggest of screens. I mentioned last week that Warner Bros. has been hellbent on getting this project off the ground and that they would no doubt have a long list of directors that they want to helm the film. According to Badass Digest, Paul Greengrass (above) is at the very top of their wish list. How’s that for an interesting choice? Continue Reading…
Dammit. This one hurts, and for a few reasons. The biggest being that the long awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s masterpiece, The Stand, has hit yet another snag in the road leaving a bunch of question marks in the process. If you folks remember, Scott Cooper—director of Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace—was brought on board to replace Ben Affleck, who was originally attached. Now, The Wrap reports that Scott Cooper has fallen off of The Stand, Warner Bros.’ planned film adaptation of the Stephen King novel, according to two individuals familiar with the project. Their reasoning? “Creative differences”, says one of those individuals. Continue Reading…
I’m everything you ever were afraid of; Stephen King’s IT is getting adapted into two films!
This needed to happen, folks. The fact that it has taken this long for a new adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling novel It is kind of unbelievable. The book itself is terrifying, and the 1990 miniseries certainly had its moments so it’s surprising that we haven’t seen a new take on the story sooner. THR reports, Cary Fukunaga, the hot-shot filmmaker behind last year’s adaptation of Jane Eyre, is boarding the project as director and will co-write the script with Chase Palmer, who previously adapted Frank Herbert’s Dune for Paramount.
