Those of you who stick pretty close to Rhino’s Horror know what a roller coaster ride the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand has been lately as three directors have already dropped out before finally landing on The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone. Some great news has finally struck the project because not only does it look like Boone is actually going to be sticking around, but he says that it’s going to be a 3-hour long film and will be rated R.
We’re gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board. Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it’s gonna be awesome.
The notion of a movie version of Stephen King’s masterful tale being told in just a single film is a scary one, and I think that’s part of the reason why we’ve seen so many directors ultimately leave the project—it’s certainly no easy task adapting King’s massive novel into one film. That being said, it looks like Boone has been able to do just that and I couldn’t be happier. Obviously, it’d be nice to see The Stand get the ultimate treatment by either getting a multiple film deal or even a mini-series, but if it absolutely has to be just one film… this is the best we could have ever hoped for. An epic 3-hour telling of King’s story that will be Rated-R is music to my ears, and I can’t wait to see what Boone has in store.
I wonder who these “A-listers” are? Star power can go a long way in a film like this because the characters of this story are so in depth and important that it’s going to need some serious talent to bring them to life. Right now there’s no word on who’s going to be starring in the film other than Nat Wolff, who can be seen in Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars.
I’m pretty optimistic about this one, which is surprising considering all that it has been through up to this point. While Boone may have seemed like an odd choice at first, it’s starting to become clear why he was chosen for the project. He found a way to bring The Stand to the big screen when no other director could. That’s gotta count for something.
Only 3 hours and only one movie? Color me skeptical on this one, Ryan. There is too much story in that book for one movie.
You’re definitely right about that. There’s a LOT of story in The Stand but not all of it needs to be in the film. Something tells me that WB wasn’t going to make this movie if they couldn’t get it done in one film, which I think is why so many directors have left the project. So, with that said, I’m just glad that it’s actually happening, 1 film or not.
Side note: It’s interesting that IT gets two films while The Stand only gets one.
You know, its such a big and all encompassing story/book (I read it over a period of months) I’m also wondering if cramming it into one film is a good idea. However I will be happy with an R-rated version to counter the tame made-for-tv-version.
Yea, you’re exactly right. I think people are overlooking the fact that this movie doesn’t get made if it’s not just a single film. So one film that’s lengthy and rated R is a pretty solid outcome if you ask me.
“Cramming” is the right word though, I hope it’s less of trying to cram the novel into one film and more trying to hit all the right key elements in the book to tell a good story.
I agree, if they ‘cram’ its going feel rushed and its going to suck. I think they have to decide very carefully what to leave in and what to omit. Let’s face it, you could do some trimming on some King stories and still tell a solid tale :)
Nice info Ryan. I loved the mini series many years ago and would love a 3 hour movie (if not more). For some reason I can see Ed Harris in this one. Don’t ask me why. I just have a feeling. :)
I’d honestly take Ed Harris in anything. That’s a guy we just haven’t seen a whole lot lately. Great choice!
Neat.
It really is a mini series for HBO not a regular movie, they will miss too much out in 3 hours
A mini series would be nice but that is most certainly not happening. I think Josh Boone is going to do a good job, have a little faith!
Wow – this sounds incredibly ambitious. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to adapt a “regular” novel to the big screen, let alone a Stephen King tome.
Glad they finally found a director who will “stick”, and here’s hoping fans of the written work will be pleased.
Yea, it’s certainly not going to be easy for them to bring this one to life, especially up to the standard of its fans.
Some good news in here. Sure, it would be awesome if it was turned into something like three films. But unless Peter Jackson becomes interested all of a sudden, it’s probably not going to happen. So three hours and R rating at least gives scope for hope. On the surface, a strange choice of director. But willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I actually really like this choice for director. For me, “Fault in our Stars” is the best movie of 2014, thus far. It did everything it needed to do and Boone was able to dial-up the tension in a drama and make it feel genuine and real; it wasn’t a lame romantic story with generic characters. “Fault in our Stars” told a substantial story, developed the characters well and sustained a strong pace the entire run-time, which ran over two hours.
Just like “Fault in our Stars” I have not read “The Stand” and actually don’t know a thing about it, which is how I like to go into movies – not knowing a thing about the content and then being surprised at every turn; it’s the best way to experience a movie. I am going to be sure to steer clear of anything regarding “The Stand” and then hopefully have an awesome experience absorbing it on the big screen, much like I did “Fault in our Stars”. Hopefully Josh Boone delivers for me again. I don’t see why he wouldn’t, especially considering he is taking on movies with strong content.
So, to any horror fans who may have thought Josh Boone was a bad choice and assumed “Fault in our Stars” was another “Twilight”, etc. you would be mistaken, so hopefully I can alleviate those concerns.
Now…let’s just hope the studio gives him the freedom to be creative! :)
He’s a great director and I like that he actually takes time with his characters. And that’s huge news for The Stand because the characters are everything in that story and it’s such a big book that you spend a lot of time with each character and really get to know them. This being a single film would be a challenge for any director, but I think Boone can make it work. We’ll see!
I’m not sure if you watch romantic dramas, but you should check out “Fault in our Stars” if you get a chance and see what you think; you’ll be able to get an assessment of Boone as a director.
I actually did see Fault in our Stars because of my girlfriend. Not really my kind of movie—the whole misery porn thing—but it’s directed very well and and it got me excited for Boone to do The Stand.
