Chupugcabra

We’ve seen quite a few fantastic short films grace the Short Round over the years, but none have been quite like Aaron B. Koontz’s The El Chupugcabra. With a heavy dose of over the top horror and comedy, Koontz’s short film follows a young family that adopts a pug and gets a whole hell of a lot more than they ever imagined. Continue Reading…

Today we have a special treat for the Short Round as it features the short film debut of the talented Larry Alan who’s certainly no stranger to these parts as he was featured right here on Rhino’s Horror with a gallery of gorgeously disturbing photographs that captured terror in a single shot. But now Alan has taken his talents into the world of film with his short It was a Midsummer’s Afternoon in which a beautiful day in the woods takes a frightening turn. Continue Reading…

Like-a-doll_06

Up and coming French director Joseph Catté has just released a fantastic little short film titled Like a Doll starring Pauline Helly. Based on a story by Roland Topor, Like a Doll is a fascinating short film about the struggle of a young woman against a masculine entity. It’s an impressive nod to psychological horror from Catté who paints a gorgeous portrait with very few tools. Continue Reading…

Lightsout

Ah, the Short Round, how lovely to see you again! On tap today is a brilliant little short film from Swedish director David Sandberg titled Lights Out. The horror genre tends to get a lot of guff for relying on nothing but jump scares which is considered to be an easy way out to scare the audience. But in a short film setting like Lights Out, the jump scare is its best friend. The director has a very small window to work with, so fusing his short with one jump scare after another proves to be quite effective. Continue Reading…

GrayMatterStill03

I hardly have the words to describe just how amazingly cool this trailer is for director Red Clark’s short film Gray Matter, but it is by far one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while. It’s a short horror film adaptation of a story from Stephen King’s Night Shift collection and will be playing at festivals this winter. Continue Reading…

One-Last-Dive-1024x576

V/H/S 2 and Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener takes us on a minute-long trip into under water hell with his latest short film One Last Dive. With only one short minute to spare, Eisener’s film is a terrifying look at what a a search and rescue team find in the murky depths of a lake. What they find at the bottom is nothing short of terrifying. It may only be a minute long but it accomplishes exactly what it set out to do — and that is to make you think twice before you ever go swimming at night again!

Short Round: It can all end in a blink of an eye

Abeshort

Rob McLellan’s short film ABE is a brilliantly crafted bit of sci-fi that is every bit disturbing as it is beautiful. It’s such a unique premise that starts with a girl bound to a table with some medical tools sitting on a table next to her. When we meet the killer and he speaks for the first time with his terrifyingly calm voice it sends a shiver down your spine. ABE  is an astonishing short film that crawls deep under your skin with its haunting dialogue from a lifeless killer. Continue Reading…

The latest addition to the “Short Round” comes to us from director Anthony Melton who easily puts a lot of short films to shame with this beautifully shot short and its face splitting practical effects. Melton doesn’t waste any time here as he uses every second of its 14 minute run-time to bring us scare after scare. Major props to the team that designed the creature and did the special effects, the whole thing is absolutely  brilliant and a ton of fun to watch. Don’t Move marks Melton’s first short film but something tells me we’ll be seeing his name popping up in the horror genre very often in the near future. Continue Reading…

What a perfect way to start our favorite holiday off with this brilliantly made low budget short film, No Way Out. It’s an intense and horrifying look at a man trying to escape his own mind with some jaw dropping uses of practical effects. This beautifully shot short film was made with a shoe string budget of less than $3,000, yet still manages to be better looking than a lot of feature films we see today. Continue Reading…
