RemakeHolly

In news that is more eye-rollingly terrible than anything else, another The Omen remake is on the way thanks to Platinum Dunes, the guys behind such classic remakes as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, The Hitcher, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. So this one is definitely going to be awesome, right? This news and remake feel so utterly pointless to me that I almost skipped it entirely, but I instead decided to share my misery with you folks. You’re welcome. Continue Reading…

audition343

No way this will flop, you guys.

Did they learn nothing from the disaster that was Spike Lee’s Oldboy? Remaking a psychological classic like Audition is bad enough in its own right, but remaking a Takashi Miike film is worse. Terminator and Rambo producer Mario Kassar is the one piecing this all together which will have Richard Gray (The Lookalike) at the helm. They’re trying their best to avoid calling it a remake by saying it’s a new adaptation of the infamous 1997 novel by Japanese author Ryu Murakami, but let’s face it, this is totally going to be a remake of Miike’s film, who delivered an amazing adaptation of the novel back in 1999. Predator

If you’re going to remake Predator, this is how you want to do it.

Shane Black, the screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon and writer/director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, will be teaming up with Monster Squad director Fred Dekker on Fox’s remake of Predator, reports THR. And somehow it actually gets better as John Davis—who produced the original film—is on board to produce the remake as well. Shane Black is attached to direct the project and will write the initial treatment of the film before handing off scripting duties to Dekker. If you’re familiar at all with Shane Black then you’ll know that he brings with him a fantastic ability to create some kickass characters with a hard comedic edge to them. Teaming up with Dekker is just icing on the cake. Continue Reading…

Insidious

Some quick directing news hit the world of horror today as two big names have both come and gone regarding their respective projects. First up, we learned that James Wan’s long-time partner in crime Leigh Whannell will make his directorial debut with the upcoming Insidious: Chapter 3. Whannell penned the scripts of the previous two films with Wan so it’s nice to see that the project will still be surrounded by its original creators. MCDGREM WB003

It looks like Warner Bros. is going to feed the Mogwai after midnight as AICN is reporting that a remake to Joe Dante’s beloved 1984 classic, Gremlins, is currently on the fast track to the big screen. This news came in on the announcement that Richard Donner was moving forward with a sequel to another tentpole film from the 80′s—The Goonies. Continue Reading…

Pumpkinhedlance34

Sometimes it’s okay to reboot a franchise, especially when it’s as much of a dumpster fire as the Pumpkinhead series has been. I can say without hesitation that the one film to scare me as a child was Stan Winston’s 1988 directorial debut, Pumpkinhead. I could hardly make it past the VHS cover art, let alone the entire film. It’s a skin-crawling, practical effects driven supernatural horror film that despite looking quite dated these days, was one of the best horror films to come out of the 80′s. Now, the folks behind the Motion Picture Corporation of America (MPCA) are looking to reboot the series, reports The Tracking Board. Continue Reading…

One remake everyone was hoping was dead in the water appears to be taking flight once again as word is coming in via Variety that Platinum Dunes, Mandalay Pictures and Universal have brought in Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijento to direct the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Michael Bay will produce along with his Platinum Dunes producing partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller with Guber and David Zelon also producing through Mandalay Pictures. Continue Reading…

2009-triffid

The long talked about adaptation of the 1962 sci-fi classic The Day of the Triffids had sort of slipped out of existence for a while. The last we heard about this one was way back in 2012 and at the time Neil Cross had been given the nod to pen the screenplay, but other than that not a whole hell of a lot has happened with this one. Today, Deadline reported that not only is the film alive and well but they have found the right man for the job to bring this adaptation to life on the big screen once again. Continue Reading…

poltergeist-sz-02

Twentieth Century Fox has dated the upcoming Poltergeist remake/sequel for a February 13, 2015 theatrical release, giving horror fans plenty of time to let it all sink in. Details on the film itself are still pretty slim but from what we’ve seen throughout last year was that this one is most likely going to serve more as a sequel/standalone film, much like the approach that  Fede Alvarez took with the Evil Dead remake. Basically what that means is that we’ll be seeing new characters find themselves in a similar situation. That, to me, is probably the best way they could have gone about bringing Poltergeist back to the big screen because the original film is untouchable and in my opinion one of the most perfectly crafted horror films ever made.
