Archives For Guillermo del Toro

We now finally have our very first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated vampire series The Strain, from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It’s nice to finally catch a glimpse of the show despite the fact that it’s only a teaser. The source material is extremely dark which is exactly what this teaser points to as an eclipse blankets New York City in darkness, leaving only a disturbing message behind: He is hereContinue Reading…

I’ve been keeping tabs on the small screen adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain since it was announced a while back, and now—many months later and an impressive cast all lined up—we finally have the show’s first official stills! The show is based on a trilogy that was written by both Del Toro and Hogan and it features not only a unique take on vampires, but blood suckers that are evil enough to make your skin crawl. One of the new stills gives us a look at the very moment in the story that sets everything in motion as the CDC discovers something horrifying on a plane. If you watched last night’s ridiculous mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, then there’s a good chance you witnessed a creepy commercial that AMC ran during the show. It was odd bit of found-footage featuring a swarm of rats gathering around a sewer drain and running through a government building, and it turns out that this could be the start of Guillermo del Toro’s viral campaign for his upcoming adaptation of The Strain which will hit FX in 2014. Tom Hiddleston replaces Cumberbatch in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak

I have to hand it to Guillermo del Toro. Not only does he know how to get the right actors for his films, he’s also pretty damn good at replacing them. It was just a couple of weeks ago when we got the disappointing news of Benedict Cumberbatch dropping out of the much anticipated Gothic ghost story from del Toro. While losing Cumberbatch might have felt like a pretty big blow at the time, his replacement is another brilliant choice by the director. Today word came in that Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, will be taking on the role that was originally set for Cumberbatch. Not bad, del Toro, not bad at all! Now, hopefully we won’t be seeing any other names being dropped because the cast is looking pretty solid at the moment as Hiddleston will now join Charlie Hunnam, Mia Wasikowska, and Jessica Chastain (below). You never like to see a popular actor leave a project like Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak; especially when their name is Benedict Cumberbatch. First Emma Stone had to exit the film due to a conflict in her schedule now we see another one go — this time, however, it hurts much worse. As a huge fan of Cumberbatch I was pretty damn excited to see the actor take on a crazy horror flick with none other than Guillermo del Toro at the helm. Despite Cumberbatch leaving, which is no doubt some sad news, I’m positive that del Toro will find a fitting replacement – and most likely very soon. Continue Reading…

John Hurt to play Abraham Setrakian in The Strain

Ryan —  June 17, 2013 — 3 Comments

FX’s adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s horror novel The Strain has just added John Hurt to co-lead opposite Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro in the network’s high-profile drama pilot, reports Deadline.

Hurt is the final piece to the puzzle for the show as he’ll portray Professor Abraham Setrakian, a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers — if anyone will listen. The Strain was already shaping up quite nicely but now that they’ve landed Hurt to play Setrakian, I think it’s safe to say that we might just have one hell of a show on our hands. Continue Reading…

Guillermo del Toro’s haunted house chiller Crimson Peak will be shockingly violent

Ryan —  June 3, 2013 — 3 Comments

While most of us have been focusing on Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming monster flick Pacific Rim which crashes into theaters this July, he’s got another flick that I’ve mentioned a few times right here on the site called Crimson Peak in the works and today he spoke on what we can all expect regarding the upcoming haunted house thriller. The simple idea of Del Toro heading into the haunted house genre is enough to grab any horror fan’s attention — especially when the cast looks like this, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Benedict Cumberbatch (above) and Charlie Hunnam. The Strain has been rolling along at a steady pace for FX lately as they’ve just added two more to Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming vampire series based on the novels he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. The latest additions to the cast go to Titanic’s Jonathan Hyde and Inglorious Basterds’ Richard Sammel (above), reports THR. Continue Reading…

The Strain to exterminate Kevin Durand

Ryan —  April 26, 2013 — 2 Comments

It’s nice to see things rolling along for Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain because it’s one of those stories that was just meant for the small screen and I can’t wait to see where they take the series. In case you missed it, yesterday we learned that House of Cards actor Corey Stoll landed the leading role in The Strain as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, and now, according to Variety, Kevin Durand (above) will reunite with former “Lost” executive Carlton Cuse on the series to star alongside the previously announced Corey Stoll.

Durand landed the role of a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York. Durand’s character was my favorite in the novels, he’s just a total badass throughout the entire series so I’m excited to see what he does with it. So far, things are looking pretty damn cozy for Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
