Byzantium2

Almost 20 years after Interview With the Vampire, Neil Jordan explores the vampire mythology once again with Byzantium as he breathes new life into a tired genre. Led by both Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton, this vampire tale is a dark and moody flick with brilliant visuals and just enough of an original spark to make it one of the best vampire films since Let the Right One In. Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. Clara meets lonely Noel, who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Schoolgirl Eleanor befriends Frank and tells him their lethal secret. They were born 200 years ago and survive on human blood. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with deathly consequence. Continue Reading…

Neil Jordan is back in the blood-sucking genre with his latest vampire tale, Byzantium, that is set for its debut on June 28th through IFC Films in limited theaters as well as VOD. I’m pumped to see Jordan bringing us a new vampire flick because his Interview with the Vampire is easily one of my favorite flicks in the genre. Now more than ever do we need a solid film to return vampires back to their terrifying roots — hopefully Jordan’s Byzantium is the film that will do just that. Continue Reading…

Short Round: Ain’t So Pretty Now Are We?

soprettyshortfilm

Created by Al Loughner, comes a short film called The Continuum: ‘So Pretty’ that shows us what a vampire in a modern world would really be like. Beautifully shot on Red, Loughner has delivered an incredible short film that creates an atmosphere of dread on this quiet subway train that moves underneath the city. With all of the glamorizing of the vampire genre we’ve seen lately, it’s nice to see someone like Loughner bring them back to their roots, as he gives us a brutal and cursed monster. While it may not be bringing anything entirely new to the genre, it’s still an extremely smart set up that will quickly remind you why you should always fear vampires. Continue Reading…

Intense Trailer For Park Chan-wook’s Vampire Tale ‘Stoker’ Tears Life Apart

Ryan —  September 26, 2012 — 5 Comments

March 1, 2013 will mark a great day in horror history with Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy, Thirst) english-language film debut about the nasty Stoker family. Written by Ted Foulk, this vampire tale looks and feels just like a Chan-wook film with a great set of tension and character development.

Starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Alden Ehrenreich, Phyllis Somerville and Dermot Mulroney.

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

You can tell that Chan-wook draws a lot of inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Shadow of a Doubt which features an Uncle Charlie of its own. Take out the vampire angle of Stoker and you have a film that echo’s Shadow of a Doubt in a fascinating way. So if you find yourself unable to wait for Chan-wook’s upcoming english-language debut then give Hitchcock’s classic a watch, you won’t be disappointed.

Stoker is the first of a planned trilogy from the Korean master of the genre. Watch the trailer below:

First Clip From Neil Jordan’s ‘Byzantium’

Ryan —  September 7, 2012 — 5 Comments

Interview with the Vampire director Neil Jordan returns to the genre with the highly anticipated vampire flick Byzantium starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley and Saoirse Ronan. Set for its premier this week at TIFF we get this very cool clip which shows a vampire’s undeniable urge to drink human blood. Normally I stay away from clips of movies I’m excited to see but this film has been so under the radar that I had to share it with you guys.

In the film, “Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort.

More Images For ‘Byzantium’

Ryan —  July 24, 2012 — 1 Comment

With Neil Jordan’s return to the vampire genre looming around the corner with Byzantium, some fresh new pictures have arrived. Byzantium is set to premier at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and with anticipation of the its debut they have released a few more great looking images for the film starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.

Byzantium centers around Eleanor who is exhausted from being on the run for 200 years and has become desperate to settle down. But little does she know that her mother has been protecting her all of these years from their own kind, “The Brotherhood”. In order to escape from them, they must either blend in or continue running. But just as they think they may have escaped, their past quickly catches up with them.

With each new image for Jordan’s upcoming vampire film my anticipation grows more and more. It’s certainly shaping up to be something that looks very cool and who better to bring us an authentic vampire film than the creator of Interview with the Vampire. Check out the pics below.
