Meet The New Norman Bates As Freddie Highmore Moves Into ‘Bates Motel’
We are just weeks away from the start of filming of A&E’s pilot episode of Bates Motel with Lost, Heroes, and House M.D. director Tucker Gates at the helm. The much anticipated Psycho prequel has just recently locked up Vera Farmiga as Norma Louise Bates who’s character is being described as a passionate, and compelling, a smart, multidimensional character who is always capable of surpassing us. Now all we need is Norman Bates.
Our serial-killer-to-be, Norman Bates, will be played by Freddie Highmore (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland) who will be filling the shoes of Anthony Perkins. I knew the choice for Norman Bates was going to be surprising but I would have never guess it would be Highmore. He hasn’t worked much lately but he’s definitely a capable young actor that will be interesting to see bring a side to Norman Bates we have never seen before.
Executive producer Carlton Cuse said that his vision of Norman might not be what fans are expecting. Cuse isn’t planning on having Highmore imitate Perkins, as this series will offer an original, multi-layered take on Alfred Hithcock’s classic. This is something that fans need to remember going into the series because comparing Highmore to Perkins is just unfair and something that will always over shadow his performance. So far I’m very pleased with the casting and excited to see where this series will go.
“Bates Motel” gives viewers an intimate understanding of how Norman Bates’ psyche developed from his childhood through his teen years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand how his mother, Norma, and her love damaged Norman helped forge the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history.
Shooting begins September 24th in Vancouver.

Great Look At Toby Jones As The Master Of Suspense
We’ve seen two Alfred Hitchcock-themed films go into production over the last year, one of them being the star studded cast led by Anthony Hopkins in Hitchcock. The other film is The Girl which has unfortunately been in the shadow of the other film and is getting much less attention than it most certainly deserves.
The Girl stars Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren. This film will focus on the relationship Hitchcock had with Hedren during their time together on The Birds and Marnie. While The former film focuses primarily on the making of Psycho, The Girl will shed some light on Hitchcock’s obsession with fashion model Tippi Hedren who he chose as his image of the “perfect” blonde. His obsession with her ultimately led to both of their careers getting destroyed.
I honestly can’t say which one I’m more excited for. Hitchcock has a stellar cast and the film will give us an amazing look at how he made Psycho with no studio’s backing him up and a very small budget. And on the other hand, The Girl will give us a never before seen look into the life of one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema.
The Girl will debut on HBO on October 20th. Check out some great pictures of Jones as Alfred Hitchcock.
