From directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke comes the Tropfest 2013 finalist, Cargo — a truly brilliant take on the zombie genre and 7 minutes of pure gold. Easily one of my favorite new additions to the Short Round so far is this fantastic short film because it takes a very surprising approach to turning into the undead as a man is faced with the ultimate decision. Short Round: Some very precious Cargo
Director Fede Alvarez was met with a tall task when he took on the responsibility of helming Evil Dead as his directorial debut. Hand picked by Sam Raimi himself, Alvarez crafted a stylish tribute to a cult classic that I believe only he could have made. While Alvarez gave nods to the original film as well as adapting Sam Raimi’s fast pace camerawork, he still managed to put his own stamp on it as if to say, “I may be bad… but I feel gooood.” Continue Reading…

International Poster for ‘Carrie’ Remake Covered in Blood
Other than the fantastic fan made poster released months ago we have yet to be treated to an official one. After wrapping up the Carrie panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con, Screen Gems has released the poster showing off their star Chloe Grace Moretz covered in the famous pig’s blood. I dig the poster quite a bit, it’s simple, shows us the goods, and has a pretty cool and effective tagline: “You will know her name.”
“A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.”
Check out the bloody new poster.

New Trailer for Aussie Thriller ‘Crawl’
A couple of weeks ago I posted the first official trailer for the film Crawl which featured no dialog but still managed to deliver a trailer that was fueled by pure intensity. Now, we have a brand new trailer that takes a different approach while still showing its brutal nature. In this new trailer we get plenty of dialog and more of an idea as to what the film is going to be like. If you weren’t excited about the film to begin with, then just take a look at this new intense trailer because it’s sure to change your mind.
Crawl is a character-driven thriller set in an unknown, rural town. A seedy bar-owner hires a mysterious Croatian to murder an acquaintance over an unpaid debt. The crime is carried out, but a planned double-crossing backfires and an innocent waitress suddenly becomes involved. Now a hostage in her own home, the young woman is driven to desperate measures for survival. A suspenseful, yet darkly humorous chain of events builds to a blood-curdling and unforgettable climax.
You can expect to see this film in early October on VOD. Check out the new trailer below.

David Gordon Green’s Suspiria
David Gordon Green is known for a lot of things, none of which are horror related which is why some of you may be surprised that he will be helming the project. Green is most known for his films Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter, all of which are comedies. On the surface it is definitely an unlikely person to helm the project but it might ease the pain knowing that Green has been determined to get this film off the ground for years because he is extremely passionate about the film. The problem with getting the film made was that Dario Argento, the director of the original 1977 film, didn’t give up the rights until 2010 causing it to get delayed. It looks like Green’s patience has finally paid off because the film got the all important green-light and is scheduled to shoot in September.
Suspiria is about a newcomer who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned ballet academy. After a fellow student is horribly murdered and several other brutal homicides disrupt the once quiet campus, she comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.
You probably wont be seeing a whole lot of backlash from people regarding this remake because fans of Argento’s work are few and far between. A lot of critics feel that his films are cheap and overly violent and if you have seen any of his movies that description isn’t far from the truth. With that being said however, I would highly recommend Suspiria to those who haven’t seen it because it is the only film of Argento’s that I feel actually lives up to the hype. It is a surreally demented fairytale type of story that Argento brings to life perfectly with unsettling, intense color and amazing set designs. It’s an extremely violent and nerve-wracking journey that many believe to be one of the most important horror films ever made.
It’s a daunting task from an unlikely director but that makes this remake even more intriguing. The remake is being backed by Crime Scene Pictures who had this to say:
“We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film.”
The question now is, who will be playing Suzie, the bright and ambitious American student? With the film shooting as early as September they are no doubt going to be looking to cast that character as soon as possible. With Chloe Moretz starring in the upcoming Carrie remake, I’d like to see the same approach taken regarding Suspiria with another great young actress.
Could this be the remake that will break the mold, or will we get another forgettable horror film that lacks everything that made the original work so well?
As always, thanks for reading.

The Seasoning House
The Seasoning House is Paul Hyett’s long awaited directorial debut. His name might not sound familiar to you but his amazing work should. For the last 20 years he’s been doing special effects make-up on films like The Descent, Attack the Block, and most recently The Woman in Black just to name a few. The film is currently shooting on an abandoned air force base right outside London. Expect this movie to blow you away with its hard hitting action and suspense. Hyett compares his film to a mixture of Martyrs, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Die Hard. Now that’s one hell of a mash-up right there.
The Seasoning House takes place in Eastern Europe where soldiers kidnap young girls who are kept in a run-down house and sold off as prostitutes. A deaf mute orphan named Angel is a slave to the soldiers whose job is to tend to the girls that are in a drug-induced state. What her captors don’t know, is that to she secretly moves between the walls of the house, wriggling through vents, lurking in the small crawlspaces where she observes the soldiers, learning and planning her escape. One day, the the very men who are responsible for brutally murdering her entire family happen to show up to indulge their sick appetites. When she viciously stabs one of them to death, the time has finally come to make her escape.
The director Paul Hyett said in an interview,
“The moment the knife hits his chest, the fairytale feeling shatters and it gets faster paced, very messy, extremely nasty and completely mad.”
I love this guy. This movie sounds like it’s going to be one hell of a suspenseful and gruesome ride. Hope you guys are as excited as I am for this one. There is no set release date for the film that I know of but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later. As always, thanks for reading!
