Blu-ray Review: The Conjuring

The Conjuring_2

Seeing as how I never got the chance to review James Wan’s The Conjuring when it scared up theaters back in July, I figured a Blu-ray review only made sense. Hitting shelves on October 22nd, acclaimed director James Wan’s The Conjuring follows a pair of paranormal investigators who help a family haunted by a demonic force, only to find themselves trapped in their own horrifying nightmare. The film stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren; Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor as Roger and Carolyn Perron. Continue Reading…

Revenge Is Served Raw in ‘Bedevilled’ Trailer

Ryan —  August 30, 2012 — 1 Comment

After taking home the award for best film at 2010′s Fantastic Fest, Chul-soo Jang’s Korean thriller has quickly reached cult status through its horrific story of torment and great cinematic tension. Bedevilled marks Jang’s directorial debut and he proves that as a storyteller he’s going to be a force in the industry. His fascinating and intense thriller has earned its high marks by perfectly blending drama-thriller with horror.

Bedevilled is finally getting a US blu-ray release on October 9th and with that we get a fantastic trailer which shows off how gorgeously shot this film is and exactly why the word bedevilled means “to torment mercilessly; plague”.

An irate office worker goes on a forced vacation to her home town on a remote Korean island to reunite begrudgingly with her childhood friend. When she gets there she finds the village is extremely backwards and her friend is ill-treated. Eventually her weakness, fear and selfishness cause a devastating chain of events that leave the island in chaos and her own life in danger.

Check out the trailer below.

Robopocalypse

The Missing Reel

Ryan —  July 20, 2012 — Leave a comment

Here is a compilation of some of the stuff that mattered to me this week whether it be good or bad. This week on The Missing Reel we take a look at the lead for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, a great look at Sienna Miler as Tippi Hedren, Sam Raimi talks Evil Dead reboot and much more.

Steven Spielberg Finds His Leading Actor for ‘Robopocalypse’

The Cabin in The Woods writer Drew Goddard has written Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Robopocalypse who might have just found its leading actor. The film is based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson which explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.

Deadline reports: “Spielberg met and now wants Hemsworth in his next helming effort Robopocalypse, the big technothriller which is sure to become the director’s next big global popcorn film.

I’m a fan of this choice, Chris Hemsworth has proven he can be a leading man and he’s a great actor and he’ll most definitely be in good hands with Spielberg behind the camera. The film is slated for a April 25th, 2014 release.

‘Evil Dead’ Wraps Up

It was hard to believe when the film was first announced that they were really going to remake the horror classic that is The Evil Dead. To many horror fans this film seemed untouchable when it came to the world of remakes but this just proved that no film is safe in that aspect. If there is any silver lining, it’s that it’s being produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell who were very involved in the entire film.

Well, we are that much closer to seeing the film on screen because the remake has officially wrapped up production on the film. Raimi had some pretty interesting things to say about the upcoming reboot and when asked if there will the iconic character of Ash in the film he said,“No, that character’s not in this movie“. He also referred to the new film that it will be “gut-wrenching, scary and intense“. It definitely sounds like this remake is going down the right path because it’s going to stay true to the original feel of the first film without copying it shot for shot. I’ll admit, I was one of the people completely against this remake but now that it’s on our doorstep I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m actually pretty excited to see what they came up with. Hoping for the best.

‘Killer Klowns From Outer Space’ Gets Blu-ray Release

If you are a fan of ridiculous cheesy B-movie’s then Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a must own. I can’t think of a better way to watch this film than in high def and we will all get the chance on September 11 as Fox Home Entertainment will be releasing the cult classic on blu-ray.

Fantastic Look At Sienna Miller As ‘The Birds’ Tippi Hedren

Some of you may remember a few months back I talked about the upcoming Hitchcock project The Girl which explores Alfred Hitchcock’s obsession with his The Birds actress Tippi Hedren who will be played by the lovely Sienna Miller.

He chose an unknown fashion model to play the main character in his most ambitious film, The Birds. Hitchcock was known for sculpting his actresses into the perfect blondes of his imagination but as he was doing this for Hedren he became obsessed with this impossible dream of winning her real love. Because of his failure to do so, it is said that it arguably destroyed both of their careers.

Between this and the upcoming Hitchcock  we are in store for a couple of very fascinating looks into the life of the true Master of Suspense. Take a look at Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren.

Rob Zombie Describes ‘The Lords of Salem’ as Torture

More awesome news coming out of The Lords of Salem with some great quotes from director Rob Zombie. For weeks now we have been getting treated to some great pics of Zombie’s upcoming horror film and while we have yet to see a trailer, Zombie has spoken a bit about the film making the film sound even better than it did before. Here is what he had to say.

I’m in the final stages of finishing the film. By the end of August, we’ll be done. The sound designers are still creating some of the sound effects for the movie. Once they’re done, I’ll go into the mix stage in August and mix the final sound for the movie. Then, I’ll be done.”

A lot of people have been wondering exactly what kind of horror film this is going to be. Zombie also talked a little about what we can expect in that aspect and it all sounds very promising.

This movie is definitely a slow psychological burn…It’s a weird movie,” said Zombie. “When you watch it, it seems like there’s not a lot happening for a while. However, what’s happening is you’re starting to get sucked into the pace of the movie though.

It’s a very strange movie. I wanted to go against a lot of the conventions that I’ve seen in what are considered horror movies. There are certain things that always happen. I wanted to break away from them. It’s a more psychological movie.” Zombie adds that, while it’s a slow burn, some crazy shit does happen: “Lots of little crazy things happen all the way through it. There’s not one particular thing where you’re flying out of your seat.

Rob Zombie also jokingly said, “The way it unfolds is like Chinese water torture dripping on you.

The Missing Reel

Ryan —  July 6, 2012 — 6 Comments

Here is a compilation of some of the stuff that mattered to me this week whether it be good or bad. This week on The Missing Reel James Lee presents an amazing animated video from one of the best scenes in Prometheus, new pictures from Rob Zombies The Lord’s of Salem, a look at the first poster for Sam Raimi’s upcoming Oz and much more. Enjoy.

New Pictures for Anthology Horror Film ‘Doomsday Book’

This month at the Fantasia Film Festival many highly anticipated horror films will be debuting and one of which will be the South Korean horror anthology Doomsday Book. The anthology will feature three different stories that present a completely different look at many apocalypitic scenarios. Here are some new pictures from Kim Ji-woon’s segment.

Four New Stills From Rob Zombie’s ‘The Lords of Salem’

Rob Zombie knows how to please his fans. For months now he’s been regularly sharing new photos of his highly anticipated upcoming horror film The Lords of Salem. One of them is a fantastic picture of the stars of the film Pat Quinn, Dee Wallace and Judy Geeson. Also in the pictures are Meg Foster, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Salem Radio jock Herman “Whitey” Salvador”, and of course Sheri Moon Zombie as Heidi LaRoc. Check them out.

Amazing Animated Scene From ‘Prometheus’

Incase you have yet to see Ridley Scott’s Prometheus you might want to skip over this next part. But for those of you who have seen the film you’ll definitely want to check out this awesome animated video from James Lee. In it he does his own hilarious interpretation of what is in my opinion the best scene in the entire film and hands down one of the best moments in a horror film in quite some time.

Another Look At Guillermo del Toro’s Epic Sci-fi Monster Flick

Theres a new picture of Del Toro’s Pacific Rim floating around and it features Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suited up for what can only be an epic battle with monsters. Recently Del Toro stated that the fight scenes throughout the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.

First One-Sheet For Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’

Some would argue that this isn’t horror related but let’s just be honest. The Wizard of Oz is freaky as shit to little kids. One of horror’s greatest directors, Sam Raimi, will be directing the latest tale of Oz and the first poster is gorgeous.

The film will follow a small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco), who pulls one flim-flam too many and finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz, where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard – and just maybe into a better man as well.

Also starring are Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. You can expect to see Oz: The Great and Powerful in theatres on March 8, 2013.

Justin Long In Talks For Stephen King’s ‘The 10 O’Clock People’

It was recently announced that Tom Holland, the director of Child’s Play and Fright Night will visiting a Stephen King short story The 10 O’Clock People. Now, it appears that Justin Long might be interested in starring in the film. The story follows Brandon Pearson, who in trying to kick his smoking habit uncovers a frightening aspect of reality he plans to extinguish through extreme measures.

Peanuts As Horror Villians

Ever wonder what the Peanuts would look like if they were some of the most iconic horror villains? Ya me either… But had you ever thought of something like that then here’s the picture just for you.

The Missing Reel

Ryan —  June 29, 2012 — 8 Comments

Here is a compilation of some of the stuff that mattered to me this week whether it be good or bad. This week on The Missing Reel we take a look at the first picture of Chloe Moretz as Carrie White, the Universal Monsters get a blu-ray release, the poster for the upcoming horror thriller The Tall Man and more.

First Look at Chloe Moretz as Carrie White

If you are a regular to the site then you know plenty about the upcoming remake of Stephen King’s classic novel, Carrie. It’s not an official photo but it does give us a taste as to what Chloe’s character is going to look like compared to the other actresses who have taken on the iconic role. A lot of people are against Moretz playing the role of Carrie simply because she doesn’t quite look the part of a girl that would be an outcast in high school but I’m pretty confident Mortez will be able to bring something new to the character and will surprise a lot of people.

Viggo Mortensen Might Lead ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a relatively unknown film simply because it’s been in development hell for years and until just recently the film has started to pick up speed. Neil Marshall is attached to direct the film who brought us great horror gems like The Descent and Dog Soldiers. Right now casting is till pretty unknown but rumored to have been offered the lead role is Viggo Mortensen who will star along side Ben Kingsley and possibly Noomi Rapace.

Right now a lot of the film is up in the air but we can only help the film can get moving because it’s a project I’ve had my eye on for quite a while. The most recent draft was written by Lowell Cauffiel and is said to be a lot like Alien in the sense that during the voyage the crew is slaughtered one-by-one by an mysterious passenger.

Iconic Horror Masterpieces Together on Blu-ray

Universal will be releasing their Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection on October 2 which will be just in time for Halloween. This box set is essentially a horror fan’s wet dream. The collection will bring together Universal’s legendary monsters in perfect high-definition. The films included are Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Wolf Man (1941), Phantom of the Opera (1943), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). And if 8 films wasn’t enough, how about complete bonus features for each film with the restoration process and much more. Start saving now, it’s a must buy!

First Official Poster for ‘The Tall Man’

From the director of Martyrs comes his latest horror film The Tall Man starring Jessica Biel.

In an isolated, slowly dying mining town, children are vanishing without a trace – abducted, the townsfolk whisper, by a mysterious entity known locally as “The Tall Man.” Town nurse Julia Denning (Biel) seems skeptical…until her young David disappears in the middle of night. Frantic to rescue the boy, Julia lives every parent’s darkest nightmare in this twisting, shock-around-each-corner thriller from acclaimed director Pascal Laugier.

You can expect to see the film on August 31st.

Awesome Limited Edition Poster for ‘Insidious’

Take a look at this insane poster created by Jordan Debney for James Wan’s Insidious. I really enjoyed the first half of Insidious but once the third act came around the film totally fell apart and ruined what was almost a great film. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this poster though, check it out below.
