Archives For Anthology

Jamie Foxx teams up with SyFy for a horror anthology series
Jamie Foxx’s name is definitely not the name you first think of when you see that a horror anthology series will be headed to SyFy but it’s pretty damn cool to say the least. The series has yet to be titled but will see Foxx land an acting role as well as being on board to write, produce, and direct the series which is currently set to premiere this October with five episodes.
Deadline says that the anthology will be a nod to the classics like The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt and will tell tales with all the good stuff like envy, jealousy, and superficiality. Foxx spoke on the upcoming project saying:
This is a project that I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’m so happy to see it come to life,” Foxx said. “Get ready to lose it when some special friends and I bring the scares this October, and who knows… maybe I’ll make a guest appearance or two along the way!
He sounds pretty damn excited about the upcoming series and I’d have to say that I am too. He’s extremely talented and has an obvious passion for the project, let’s just hope he does indeed “bring the scares”.

Four New Stills From Rob Zombie’s ‘The Lords of Salem’
Rob Zombie knows how to please his fans. For months now he’s been regularly sharing new photos of his highly anticipated upcoming horror film The Lords of Salem. One of them is a fantastic picture of the stars of the film Pat Quinn, Dee Wallace and Judy Geeson. Also in the pictures are Meg Foster, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Salem Radio jock Herman “Whitey” Salvador”, and of course Sheri Moon Zombie as Heidi LaRoc. Check them out.
Amazing Animated Scene From ‘Prometheus’
Incase you have yet to see Ridley Scott’s Prometheus you might want to skip over this next part. But for those of you who have seen the film you’ll definitely want to check out this awesome animated video from James Lee. In it he does his own hilarious interpretation of what is in my opinion the best scene in the entire film and hands down one of the best moments in a horror film in quite some time.
Another Look At Guillermo del Toro’s Epic Sci-fi Monster Flick
Theres a new picture of Del Toro’s Pacific Rim floating around and it features Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suited up for what can only be an epic battle with monsters. Recently Del Toro stated that the fight scenes throughout the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.”

First One-Sheet For Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’
Some would argue that this isn’t horror related but let’s just be honest. The Wizard of Oz is freaky as shit to little kids. One of horror’s greatest directors, Sam Raimi, will be directing the latest tale of Oz and the first poster is gorgeous.
The film will follow a small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco), who pulls one flim-flam too many and finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz, where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard – and just maybe into a better man as well.
Also starring are Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. You can expect to see Oz: The Great and Powerful in theatres on March 8, 2013.
Justin Long In Talks For Stephen King’s ‘The 10 O’Clock People’
It was recently announced that Tom Holland, the director of Child’s Play and Fright Night will visiting a Stephen King short story The 10 O’Clock People. Now, it appears that Justin Long might be interested in starring in the film. Peanuts As Horror Villians
Ever wonder what the Peanuts would look like if they were some of the most iconic horror villains? Ya me either… But had you ever thought of something like that then here’s the picture just for you.

Red Band ‘V/H/S’ Trailer Finally Arrives
Over the last couple of years the go to horror genre has been the found footage one and just when you thought they were becoming stale and repetitive, V/H/S debuts it’s first trailer and washes all of the other ones away. The trailer is absolutely fantastic and is a must watch for any fan of horror. I’ve said many times before but I honestly believe that the horror anthology genre is making its comeback and with V/H/S finally releasing a trailer it looks like we might be getting the best one in recent memory.
Early reviews of the film have people raving about its creativity and how downright scary it is. So far the film is on the right track with just releasing an amazing poster and following it up with an even better trailer. The film combines the directing talents of Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull),Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with YouTube sensations Radio Silence.
“When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.”
Check out the trailer below.

The Missing Reel
Here is a compilation of some of the stuff that mattered to me this week whether it be good or bad. This week on The Missing Reel we take a look at some great new horror posters, the new trailer for Sinister, Hugh Laurie nabs an interesting villainous role and much more. Enjoy.
‘Treachery’ Debuts Poster
The Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens) starring horror film Treachery is a great looking thriller from director Travis Romero. The film “captures the controversy between Henry and his estranged son, Nathan. Reunited at a friend’s small wedding party in a remote cabin, Henry and Nathan have their usual awkward interactions. Nathan, accompanied by his girlfriend Cecilia, seeks his father’s approval. Cecilia’s presence only adds to Henry’s discomfort, forcing him to want to leave, but a storm hits, trapping them in the cabin and headed for the worst along with the rest of the group. None of them really realize what is truly in store.”
Check out the poster below.
Anthology Horror Film ‘V/H/S’ Poster
I’ve written a little bit about the anthology film V/H/S which was a huge success at the Sundance Film Festival and they have just released this fantastic looking poster for the film. In the film, “a group of misfits hired to burglarise a house to find a rare VHS tape, only to find more found footage than they wanted to see.” I love seeing that the horror anthology genre seems to be making its long awaited return with films like this, Trick ‘R Treat, and The ABC’s of Death getting a ton of appreciation from horror fans. The directing talent involved with this film is fantastic with directors like Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), along with Radio Silence.
Look for V/H/S on VOD on August 31st of this year and a follow up theater run October 5th. Check out the poster.
‘Sinister’ Trailer
The first trailer for the much anticipated horror film Sinister has just been released by Summit Entertainment. This supernatural horror flick starring Ethan Hawke is directed by Scott Derrickson who is best known for his film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
“A true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernaturalhorror.” The trailer is pretty effective and definitely looks creepy. The story however looks very been there done that. You can expect to see this film in theaters on October 5th. Watch the trailer below.
‘Branded’ Poster
Do you guys remember the absolutely crazy looking trailer for Branded that released not too long ago? Well if you missed it you can check it out here: Branded Trailer. There is now a new poster for the film and it compliments the trailer very well in terms of being ridiculous.
The film “is a dark and mind-bending sci-fi thriller into a surreal, dystopian society where mega corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man’s quest to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.” Check it out.
Mondo Releases Vinyl of ‘The Beyond’ Soundtrack
You gotta love Mondo, these guys know exactly how to make fans of horror drool all over themselves. What is considered to a lot of people to be Lucio Fulci’s best film, The Beyond is a classic by every meaning of the word when it comes to Italian horror. The film released back in 1981 and has ever since gained cult status for its amazing murder scenes and insane visuals. An interesting thing about this film is that its soundtrack has never gotten the kind of release that it deserved but thanks to Mondo they are changing all of that.
Mondo has announced that they will be selling a limited edition vinyl pressing of the classic score done by Fabio Frizzi. Mondo states: “We’ve long been fans of Italian horror soundtracks, and The Beyond is one of the first I can remember latching onto. Frizzi’s work is the perfect backdrop to faces being melted by acid. We tried to treat the pressing with the utmost respect, we hope you enjoy it.”
Its truly amazing, check out the pictures below.
Hugh Laurie To Play Villian In ‘Robocop’
This isn’t necessarily horror related but it is very cool nonetheless. For MGM’s upcoming remake of Robocop it looks like Hugh Laurie has gotten the role as the villain. From The Hollywood Reporter,“Laurie will play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes Robocop.“
This is definitely an interesting choice of remakes but one that I am looking forward to. The cast is shaping up very nicely and I believe Laurie is going to surprise a lot of people with a role like this because it is certainly outside of his comfort zone.
ESP Releasing A Bela Lugosi Themed Guitar
Perhaps the coolest thing ever, ESP will be releasing this Limited Edition tales from the grave guitar featuring the one and only Bela Lugosi. The guitar will be released just in time for Halloween and only 325 of these will be made so getting one will be extremely difficult which is the case for anything that is ever as cool as this. The guitar will be signed by both Bela Lugosi, Jr., and the artwork designer Kerry Gammill. It’s amazing… have a look.

More on The ABC’s of Death
Anthony Timpson, Producer of The ABC’s of Death, got in touch with me and dropped some very cool information regarding the film. This is what he had to say:
“It was inspired by my love of reading ABC books to my toddlers. The film will go out on VOD early Nov and some screenings around the country at select theatres. The pacing of the film will be an assault on the sense. We’ve connected the films in an interesting way to keep the fluidity going so it feels like one feature film and not a bunch of shorts. The poster was designed by one of our directors Kaare Andrews and thats his wife (death) and baby sitting in a chair in his house. He’s a cover artist for Marvel but is now a great filmmaker too. Really hope you guys enjoy the film as much as we do.”
“It’s been a really interesting project to put together, so many pieces to the puzzle. We really had no idea how it would all play out. So I’m kinda blown away it’s come together as well as it has. We gave directors free reign and some have really gone to town. There’s lots diversity, comedy, surreal to the outright grotesque.”
I love this; giving such talented directors “free reign” only proves as to how great this film is going to be because it truly allows them to be as creative as they want. Some of the best anthology films do exactly what Timpson says by creating a film full of short stories that are strategically connected to make it have the same feeling of a feature length film. Could you ask for anything more? Also, the release date is set for Nov. and will be going on VOD which means you don’t need to worry if your theater will be getting it or not. VOD is a great new way to see horror films like this because in the past you rarely got a chance to see them before they hit DVD, so this gives horror fans a chance to see the film the day of its release.
The ABC’s of Death is the definitive snapshot of the diversity of modern horror. Drafthouse Films, Magnet Pictures and Timpson Films present an alphabetical arsenal of insanity by what Fangoria calls, “a stunning roll call of some of the most exciting names in horror across the world.”
As always, thanks for reading.

The ABC’s of Death
The ABC’s of death is this brilliant idea for an anthology film that is made up of 26 individual chapters by 26 different directors that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty. Many of the 26 directors are well established and some of the most gifted up and coming horror directors will be part of this wicked anthology project. The creative talent involved will showcase 26 tales of mortality, beginning with the letter A and ending with the letter Z.
ABC’s of Death will present death in all of its forms that range from utterly shocking to the straight up ridiculous. It is up to each director to interpret the letter that they get assigned and have to kill someone in a way that starts with that letter. They only have 6 months, 6 weeks and 6 days to finish their tale of terror. Expect to see some insanity.
The poster for this anthology film has just released and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Could there have been a better poster to represent such a film? Recently I stated how the anthology film used to be a big success but has slowly died over the years but it looks like with this film and the upcoming VHS film, anthologies might be making their long awaited return. Just looking at the poster they showcase some of the talent that will be involved with this project and it is jaw dropping. Truly some great directors that are currently on the rise are taking part in this fantastic idea and I can only expect great things from it. The anthology features segments from Adam Wingard (You’re Next), Ti West (The Innkeepers), Yoshihiro Nishimur (Tokyo Gore Police), Ben Wheatley (Kill List), Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun) and 21 other notable horror directors.
With the ABC’s of Death being made up of 26 tales of terror, the runtime for each of them can’t be very long, which basically means audiences are going to be treated to a film that constantly throws one story after another at you with what I can only hope is some of the best and funniest deaths ever put on screen.
