Blue Ruin - 2

Jeremy Saulnier makes his long awaited return to the director’s chair with his thriller Blue Ruin, a straightforward classic tale of a revenge that takes a simple concept and turns it into pulse-pounding suspense. Sometimes keeping a story simple can go a very long way, and Saulnier’s thriller does just that. The film follows a homeless man whose quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance, leading to a brutal battle to protect his estranged family. Zack Parker ventures into the world of psychological horror with Proxy, an often times brutal indie film that highlights just how crazy a mother can be. The narrative that Parker lays out has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged by revealing one plot shake-up after another, however, it all gets hindered by its unbelievable characters and unconvincing execution. Proxy follows a very pregnant Esther Woodhouse who is brutally attacked and disfigured by a hooded assailant. The attack leads her to a support group where her life of sadness and solitude is opened up to friendship, understanding, and even acceptance. However, her new found friendship and understanding are not what they seem. Continue Reading…

wolfcop2

The official trailer for WolfCop is exactly what you’re thinking it is—ridiculous and awesome in all the right ways. The ’80s had Teen Wolf, today we get the drunken, ass-kicking WolfCop that sheds his skin and goes after the bad guys. It looks like a stupid good time and exactly what B-movies are all about. I don’t have much more to say about this one, folks, so I’ll just let the trailer speak for itself! Continue Reading…

AsABove34

We’ve got more found-footage headed our way (surprise!) in the form of a pretty wicked looking thriller from the filmmakers behind Quarantine and Devil. The Dowdle Brothers’ latest foray into the genre sees two archaeologists in search of a lost treasure in the catacombs below Paris. I really dig the approach they took the story of this one—what could have easily been just another creature flick where some kids get trapped underground has instead been turned into something entirely different. Have these archaeologists found hell on earth? Continue Reading…

Borgmanstill34

I knew going into Alex van Warmerdam’s Borgman was going to be a strange experience, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a trippy fairytale-like nightmare that was tightly wrapped up in a bizarre story. It’s a very special kind of film that lays on a pitch black atmosphere that never lets you get comfortable, not even for a second. Last year we had Ben Weatley’s A Field in England to turn our brain matter into mush, this year we’ve got a wonderfully weird Borgman. It centers on a man on the run who stumbles into the lives of an arrogant upper-class family, turning their lives into a psychological nightmare. Continue Reading…

SINSTER

While original Sinister director Scott Derrickson and his co-writer C. Robert Cargill have been hard at work on a script for a sequel to the massively successful 2012 film, it was unsure as to whether or not Derrickson himself would take ahold of the directing duties. That all changed today, however, as Blumhouse took to twitter to announced that Citadel director Ciaran Foy will be the man behind the sequel. While I’m sure that many fans were hoping to see Derrickson back behind the camera for Sinister 2, take solace in knowing that he still very much has a heavy hand in the sequel with writing duties. Continue Reading…

5-the-green-inferno

The Green Inferno marks the long awaited return of director Eli Roth who hasn’t stepped behind the camera of a feature film since 2007′s Hostel: Part II, and today a teaser trailer has finally dropped for the cannibalistic tale and it’s absolutely haunting. In it we’re teased with a few close-up shots of a terrified girl tied down by a native tribe who only have one thing on the menu—man-sushi. The teaser captures the very gruesome nature of Roth’s latest foray into the genre without actually spilling any of the red stuff. It plays on the fears of our imagination because we all know what road this is heading down, the teaser just provides the direction. Continue Reading…

Friday the 13th eyes V/H/S director David Bruckner; could it be going the found-footage route?

Friday The 13th

By now it’s no secret that Paramount will be rebooting the iconic Friday the 13th franchise once again, and today things have started to heat up over at Camp Crystal Lake because it looks like the studio is eying V/H/S director David Bruckner to helm the latest installment in the franchise. Bruckner is the terrifying mind behind the “Amateur Night” segment in the horror anthology hit V/H/S, so he’s certainly a solid option to carry the machete into new territory. Continue Reading…

Indigenous trailer offers creature-feature scares

Indigenous

Alastair Orr’s creature-featured Indigenous has just debuted its trailer as it sets up for its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend. The trailer is all kinds of awesome as it features a wicked creature design—a blood-sucking Chupacabra—that makes happy meals out of a bunch of friends who go wandering off into the jungle. I’m a sucker for a practical effects driven creature-feature with a monster design that’s actually scary; surprisingly, that’s something the horror genre doesn’t see that often anymore. The trailer goes straight for the jugular and unleashes a terrifying glimpse at the film’s creature—and it looks like something that crawled straight out of the darkest corners of a nightmare.
