What does Stephen King think of the upcoming prequel to The Shining?

Just yesterday we got hit with the surprising news that a prequel to The Shining called The Overlook Hotel was on its way and would be penned by Glen Mazzara. While there are plenty of possible paths that the prequel could go down it’s still something that a lot of fans are nervous about and rightfully so. Right now it’s a huge mystery as to what Mazzara plans on doing with the project, but what we do know is that Stephen King isn’t exactly looking forward to it.

It was really only a matter of time before Stephen King himself weighed in on the news and thanks to EW, we’ve got his reaction right here:

I’m not saying I would put a stop to the project, because I’m sort of a nice guy. When I was a kid, my mother said, ‘Stephen if you were a girl, you’d always be pregnant.’ I have a tendency to let people develop things. I’m always curious to see what will happen. But you know what? I would be just as happy if it didn’t happen.

With Stephen King’s sequel to The ShiningDoctor Sleep, arriving in the fall, it has to be weird for him seeing that a prequel is on its way too — especially one he had nothing to do with. I totally agree with Mr. King here though because while I’m curious where this will all end up, I don’t think it would be hurting anyone if it just dissapeared.

Yes, R.I.P.D. is a real movie, here's a picture to prove it

If you haven’t heard of R.I.P.D. yet, here’s the low down. It’s a ridiculous sounding supernatural action flick starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds about a recently slain cop who joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Yea, ridiculous. Love the first picture so far, mostly because of Bridges’ amazing old-school handle bar mustache. The guns look interesting also, but so does this entire flick. I’m all for this Dark Horse Comics adaptation, I love off-beat ideas like this and they’ve got a great cast made up of not only Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds but Kevin Bacon, Stephanie Szostak, Mary-Louise Parker, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Robert Knepper and Tobias Segal.

Welcome to the Rest In Peace Department — the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement “patrolling the deadbeat…reporting to one boss.” Yep — THAT boss. Nick Cruz was murdered by an unknown assailent, at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he’s traded a hundred years of service to the R.I.P.D. in exchange for a shot at finding who killed him. Unfortunately his search will take him to Hell and back — literally!

R.I.P.D. was just recently announced to be getting the 3D conversion treatment and is set for a July 19th release with Robert Schwentke at the helm.
