Lindelof speaks on World War Z struggles

Ryan —  April 30, 2013 — 10 Comments

At this point we all know of the problems that plagued the set of World War Z which included the budget sky rocketing to around $200 million, re-writes of the script and the reshooting of 40 minutes of additional footage in order for them to find a coherent ending. Things certainly haven’t been easy for the flick.

Damon Lindelof — who was brought in to salvage the script and its “incoherent ending” — spoke to Vanity Fair about some of the film’s struggles and how he basically gave the studio just two options:

Is there material that can be written to make that stuff work better? To have it make sense? To have it have emotional stakes? And plot logic and all that? And Road Two, which I think is the long-shot road, is that everything changes after Brad leaves Israel.” That meant throwing out the entire Russian battle scene—or about 12 minutes of footage—and crafting a new ending. “I didn’t think anyone was going to say, ‘Let’s throw it out and try something else,’ ” Lindelof recalls. “So when I gave them those two roads and they sounded more interested in Road B”—which meant shooting an additional 30 to 40 minutes of the movie—“I was like, ‘To be honest with you, good luck selling that to Paramount.’

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this thing finally turns out and I really hope they have a hit on their hands because a big-budget zombie flick doesn’t come around all too often. And you have to hand it to the entire crew who worked on this film because things were never easy from the get-go and they still managed to put something together — whether it will be good or not is the real question.

World War Z will hit theaters on June 21, 2013.

Legendary releases a new set photo from Godzilla

Ryan —  April 30, 2013 — 2 Comments

Legendary Pictures took to their Facebook page today and released a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. The latest pic was released with the words “Be Prepared” and it certainly looks like these guys are getting ready to do that. The shot doesn’t have all the chaos and carnage that we’ve been seeing lately but it’s pretty badass nonetheless!

The flick is being directed by Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard T. Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Patrick Sabongui, Yuki Morita, Brian Markinson, Juliette Binoche, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, and Ken Watanabe are all starring in the flick.

Godzilla will crash into theaters on May 16, 2014.

New poster for The Purge

Ryan —  April 30, 2013 — 2 Comments

One of the horror films I’m really looking forward to this summer is James DeMonaco’s The Purge. I dig the entire premise of the flick and the idea of all emergency services being suspended for a 12 hour period of time is absolutely terrifying. When you’re meeting face-to-face with people who want to murder you and your family within the walls of your own home, 12 hours probably seems like an eternity.

In an America wracked by crime, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—is legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It is one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking.

The Purge will hit theaters on July 7th and stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge, Tony Oller, and Rhys Wakefield.

Short Round: Whatever you do, don’t move

The latest addition to the “Short Round” comes to us from director Anthony Melton who easily puts a lot of short films to shame with this beautifully shot short and its face splitting practical effects. Melton doesn’t waste any time here as he uses every second of its 14 minute run-time to bring us scare after scare. Major props to the team that designed the creature and did the special effects, the whole thing is absolutely  brilliant and a ton of fun to watch. Don’t Move marks Melton’s first short film but something tells me we’ll be seeing his name popping up in the horror genre very often in the near future. Continue Reading…

Stephen King's 11/22/63 being brought to the small screen by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot

Ryan —  April 26, 2013 — 5 Comments

As a huge fan of Stephen King’s thrilling novel 11/22/63 I was pretty bummed out when the whispers of an adaptation began to die down but today we’ve got some pretty great news regarding the project. According to Deadline it looks like J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is currently in negations for the rights to King’s bestselling 2011 novel 11/22/63. The transaction is being done through Warner Bros. TV, where Bad Robot is under a deal. The plan is to adapt the book as a TV series or miniseries, likely for cable.

11/22/63 centers on Jake, an unassuming divorced English teacher who stumbles upon a time portal that leads to 9/9/1958 and goes on a quest to try and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which occurred on 11/22/1963.

Now that Under the Dome is underway it’s not at all surprising to see news of another King novel getting the small screen treatment. This is another one of King’s stories that is best suited for television simply because there are just so many storylines going on throughout the novel that it would be nearly impossible to properly tell the story as a feature length film. I’m really excited to see this one come to life because it’s such a unique premise and King’s take on time-travel is pretty damn cool!

The Strain to exterminate Kevin Durand

Ryan —  April 26, 2013 — 2 Comments

It’s nice to see things rolling along for Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain because it’s one of those stories that was just meant for the small screen and I can’t wait to see where they take the series. In case you missed it, yesterday we learned that House of Cards actor Corey Stoll landed the leading role in The Strain as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, and now, according to Variety, Kevin Durand (above) will reunite with former “Lost” executive Carlton Cuse on the series to star alongside the previously announced Corey Stoll.

Durand landed the role of a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York. Durand’s character was my favorite in the novels, he’s just a total badass throughout the entire series so I’m excited to see what he does with it. So far, things are looking pretty damn cozy for Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Awesome blacklight poster for Suspiria

Ryan —  April 26, 2013 — Leave a comment

Okay now this is just awesome. “Bang! Media” artist Jeremy Wheeler came up with this sick poster design for Dario Argento’s classic Suspiria for the Silver Screen Society. Titled “Witch”, the poster compliments the film perfectly with its vibrant colors and unforgettable imagery and I have no doubt looks wicked as hell under a blacklight.

Witch – a blacklight silkscreen print made in conjunction with Silver Screen Society’s month of Suspiria art series. The hand-drawn pen-and-ink artwork portrays both the ominous and terrifying portions of the lm in equal measure, with added detail dedicated to the unique architecture featured in the lm. Measuring 18×24, the 3-color print was screened with a unique blacklight process developed through multiple projects by the artist and printing studio VG Kids. When put under UV light, the already vibrant red turns an electric pink/magenta, while the green remains intense under both.

If you’d like to hang this bad boy on your wall, you can for just $25 right HERE.

Eerie first trailer for In Fear, one of horror’s must see films of the year

Ryan —  April 26, 2013 — 6 Comments

I talked a little bit about In Fear not too long ago when it premiered at Sundance this year and it’s definitely one that you guys should be keeping an eye on. I love the isolation side of horror, especially when it involves a car — there’s just something about that premise that always gets under my skin. The trailer has just released and it really doesn’t dissapoint  — it immediately gives off that unsettling sense of eeriness that you would expect from a film like this.

A young couple fights to survive one night-turned-nightmare. Driving to a music festival, Tom and Lucy have plans to stay at a countryside hotel. But with hotel signs leading them in circles and darkness falling, they soon become lost in a maze of country roads…and the target of an unknown tormentor.

In Fear is currently scheduled for a Fall release in the UK. No word yet on a US date, but I’ll definitely be on the look-out for one as this is surely one of the “must-see” horror films of the year.

TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro's The Strain finds leading man

Ryan —  April 25, 2013 — 4 Comments

We haven’t really heard a whole lot from FX’s adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s vampire tale The Strain but it looks like things are starting to pick up as Deadline reports that Corey Stoll (below) has landed a leading role in the series.

Carlton Cuse of Bates Motel is acting as showrunner on the pilot which will be directed by Guillermo del Toro himself from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. The Strain formally has a pilot order but FX president John Landgraf has indicated it is being eyed for a series order. The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts so there’s definitely a good chance we’ll see a solid run for the series. I really enjoyed the novels and each one gets darker than the next so hopefully this thing proves to be successful because FX could really have a hit on their hands.

When a Boeing 777 lands at JFK International Airport and goes dark on the runway, the Centers for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders. Only an elderly pawnbroker from Spanish Harlem suspects a darker purpose behind the event – an ancient threat intent on covering mankind in darkness.
