Paul Solet is best known for writing and directing Grace and has now released his short film Going Down for Black Box TV and stars Marc Senter and Dinora Walcott with music by Austin Wintory. It’s the perfect length for a short film coming in at just under 6 minutes — his latest story tells the tale of Gunther Cleary (Marc Senter) who thought he had everything planned out, that is until he steps foot in an elevator that shows him that life doesn’t always go the way you expect it. Short Round: Some very precious Cargo
From directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke comes the Tropfest 2013 finalist, Cargo — a truly brilliant take on the zombie genre and 7 minutes of pure gold. Easily one of my favorite new additions to the Short Round so far is this fantastic short film because it takes a very surprising approach to turning into the undead as a man is faced with the ultimate decision. Short Round: Photography is a tough job these days
Today on the Short Round we’ve got a fantastic little short horror film written and directed by Stuart Stanton called Inside. The film was shot entirely on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera as RAW and colour graded using DaVInci Resolve and it’s absolutely gorgeous.
What differentiates between a bad short film and a good one is simply how that short amount of time is used to tell your story. Inside comes in at just under 7 minutes and holds your attention for each and every second. With almost no dialog, Inside is completely fueled by its wonderfully creepy score and great performance by Stephanie Danielides that will leave you guessing up until its final frame. Short Round: A Not So Happy Birthday
Finally, after premiering at last year’s Sundance festival, Nash Edgerton’s wonderfully dark short film, Bear, is finally available in all of its glory. Bear is a fantastic short film about a guy who just wants to surprise his girlfriend for her birthday. As you probably guessed by now, things don’t go as planned and it all takes a turn for the worse in wonderfully dark fashion. Coming in at just under 11 minutes is a short you won’t want to miss. Short Round: Ain’t So Pretty Now Are We?
Created by Al Loughner, comes a short film called The Continuum: ‘So Pretty’ that shows us what a vampire in a modern world would really be like. Beautifully shot on Red, Loughner has delivered an incredible short film that creates an atmosphere of dread on this quiet subway train that moves underneath the city. With all of the glamorizing of the vampire genre we’ve seen lately, it’s nice to see someone like Loughner bring them back to their roots, as he gives us a brutal and cursed monster. While it may not be bringing anything entirely new to the genre, it’s still an extremely smart set up that will quickly remind you why you should always fear vampires. Continue Reading…
Short Round: Don’t Get Any Ideas
As many of you know, the Sundance Film Festival is in full swing right now showing some of the great films we can expect to see later this year. Among the them are a collection of fantastic short films that they have brought straight to the public. The festival has created a YouTube channel that is hosting the participating short films online. To no surprise, there are some real gems in there. Continue Reading…
Short Round: Alway’s Wear Your Shoes, People
Ah, Lenny Lump — how you’ve ruined my days of frolicking through the woods with no shoes on. Today’s short film is brought to us by a Swedish filmmaker by the name of Pelle Plutt. The short, Lenny Lump, is based off of a Swedish nursery rhyme that’s told to children. The premise is quite simple as it follows a man who is running through the woods without a care in the world, that is, until he takes a misstep that causes him to lose a toe. Continue Reading…

Stumpy Sam Hates Summer Camp
Take a quick look at the picture above. That right there is what it looks like when you shit your pants at summer camp. These kids just learned exactly who Stumpy Sam is and The Legend of Beaver Dam. Well guess what? It turns out, Stumpy Sam isn’t a “legend” at all, but a living, breathing beast of the darkness that hates campfires and singing — making summer camp a nightmare zone. Guillermo del Toro Introduces The Original ‘Mama’ Short
One of the best horror trailers of the year goes to the Guillermo del Toro produced and Andres Muschietti directed supernatural horror film Mama. Based on the short film of the same name, Mama inspired del Toro to come up with a feature length version and I’m glad he did because it looks like the perfect supernatural chiller to start off the new year. With its January 18th, 2013 release date barring down on us, del Toro introduces to us the original short film. Continue Reading…
