If you watched last night’s ridiculous mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, then there’s a good chance you witnessed a creepy commercial that AMC ran during the show. It was odd bit of found-footage featuring a swarm of rats gathering around a sewer drain and running through a government building, and it turns out that this could be the start of Guillermo del Toro’s viral campaign for his upcoming adaptation of The Strain which will hit FX in 2014. John Hurt to play Abraham Setrakian in The Strain

FX’s adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s horror novel The Strain has just added John Hurt to co-lead opposite Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro in the network’s high-profile drama pilot, reports Deadline.

Hurt is the final piece to the puzzle for the show as he’ll portray Professor Abraham Setrakian, a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers — if anyone will listen. The Strain was already shaping up quite nicely but now that they’ve landed Hurt to play Setrakian, I think it’s safe to say that we might just have one hell of a show on our hands. Continue Reading…

TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro's The Strain finds leading man

We haven’t really heard a whole lot from FX’s adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s vampire tale The Strain but it looks like things are starting to pick up as Deadline reports that Corey Stoll (below) has landed a leading role in the series.

Carlton Cuse of Bates Motel is acting as showrunner on the pilot which will be directed by Guillermo del Toro himself from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. The Strain formally has a pilot order but FX president John Landgraf has indicated it is being eyed for a series order. The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts so there’s definitely a good chance we’ll see a solid run for the series. I really enjoyed the novels and each one gets darker than the next so hopefully this thing proves to be successful because FX could really have a hit on their hands.

When a Boeing 777 lands at JFK International Airport and goes dark on the runway, the Centers for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders. Only an elderly pawnbroker from Spanish Harlem suspects a darker purpose behind the event – an ancient threat intent on covering mankind in darkness.
