The vampire genre has been part of cinema for as long as film could run through a camera, so it’s kind of astonishing to see filmmakers continuing to push the boundaries, coming up with new ways to tell the age-old tale of bloodsuckers. Filmmakers Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s new addition to the storied genre have taken a much different, lighter route to the oldest of monsters as their story follows a a documentary crew taking an inside look at the lives of three vampires who are hundreds of years old. It’s such a ridiculous setup that the only way you can really pull it off is to do it with comedy, and Clement and Waititi have done just that.
What We Do In The Shadows is one of the most talked about films of the year as it has been leaving a wake of laughter behind every festival screening. It was recently picked up for some good ol’ U.S. distribution, which means we should be seeing this one sooner rather than later.
Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) – three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

Dude, this is freaking hilarious. Saw it the other week. This and Housebound which I was chatting about in a comment the other day are my two favourite comedies of the year. Weirdly both from New Zealand too.

This is a brilliant idea especially, as you pointed out, the vampire idea has been recycled A LOT.
Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve seen a mockumentary that I didn’t like. It’s such a clever genre.
It’s nice to see that they can still make something new and refreshing out of the genre, that’s for sure. You should check out Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, it’s a very fun mockumentary that follows around a killer who’s trying to be the next big thing like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees (they exist in their world). Really neat little film.
