A man and his granddaughter exorcise some demons.
Although Asmodexia has been quietly stirring up the genre for the last few months, it appears to be picking up some steam now that IFC Midnight has finally slated it with a release date. Hailing from Spain, Asmodexia marks the feature film debut from Marc Carrete, who has spun a unique looking tale of possession and the journey of those trying to rid their country of its evil. While I think the trailer could use some work, it does a good job of peeling back the layers of the story, showing us why Carrete’s feature debut is one worth keeping an eye on.
Having seen exorcisms done countless times in film and with the sub genre more popular than ever right now, how will Asmodexia stack up to the rest? There’s really no telling just yet, but from what we see out of the trailer this one looks like it has the right idea as far as bringing something new to the table. I like that it focuses on two people—a priest and his granddaughter—as they attempt to expel evil from people all over the country. With this set-up, it allows the film to dig deeper into possession and the effects it has on different people. As long as each case is significantly worse than the next, and we have a reason to fear what they’ll run into next on their journey, then I think Asmodexia has some serious potential.
Asmodexia hits VOD on September 26th.
Eloy de Palma is an exorcist pastor roaming the darkest corners of the country with his granddaughter, Alba. Their mission is to help those possessed by The Evil One, an infection of the soul that is spreading fast, especially among the most vulnerable members of society: children, mental patients, and drug addicts. There is also a mysterious cult following them, making it more difficult to help those in need. Each exorcism is tougher than the one before, and every battle with Evil reveals a piece of young Alba’s forgotten past – an enigma that if unconcealed could change the world as we know it.
Carrete directed from a script he wrote with Mike Hostench. It stars Clàudia Pons and Luís Marco.
Well that looks genuinely fucked up. Reminded me a bit of Martyrs. Damn Europeans doing horror better than us…
The foreigners know what’s up, man!
By the end of the month? YES! I saw the trailer a couple months ago and was like, holy fucking shit, this looks intense. At the time all the said was “before the end of the year, hopefully,” so I am really glad a release date has been set. This looks scary as hell and yeah, Spanish horror films do NOT hold back. Cannot wait for this one… I am STILL pissed off about The Green Inferno being “indefinitely delayed”. JUST PLEASE RELEASE IT ON VOD, I have literally been waiting a year to see it (since the TIFF 2013 reviews).
Fortunately we have Tusk and Asmodexia to fill the big gap left in September!
It looks great, haven’t heard much about it yet though. Hopefully it’s good! I agree, I think they should just dump it out onto VOD because the movie will still make money. Hopefully we’ll see it this year.
This looks great and yes Europeans don’t hold on horror films. I like German,Italian,Korean horror films and also English.
