Disturbia director D.J. Caruso returns to the horror genre with a haunted house film that was inspired by true events in The Disappointments Room, a psychological thriller that they are saying is in the same vein as The Shining. Although that could mean just about anything, throwing around a title like The Shining is certainly some bold words, wouldn’t you say? While I’m not a big fan of D.J. Caruso, and the title of this film could certainly use some help, there is one reason to get excited about the film.

This haunted house tale is rooted in a true story of a family’s horrible encounter with their very own home when they discover a hidden room within the attic. Okay, now I have to know what’s inside this secret little room in the attic. Sounds pretty intriguing, right? And the fact that the script was penned by the brilliant mind behind Stoker, Wentworth Miller, has me all sorts of excited for this one. He weaved a fantastic slow-buring tale in Stoker as the story was told through the eyes of some complex characters that spend most of the film hiding behind fake smiles. If we get some elements from Stoker brought into The Disappointments Room, then we should be in for one hell of a haunted house flick. It will definitely be interesting to see what Miller comes up with when he has this kind of story at his fingertips.

Taking the lead in the thriller is Kate Beckinsale who is always a solid choice when it comes to the horror genre; you can see her lovely picture at the top.

The synopsis:

The Disappointments Room tells the story of one family’s terror-filled encounter within their own home. Looking for a fresh start, Dana (Kate Beckinsale) and David, together with their 5-year-old son Jeremy, move into their dream house, a beautiful old rural home. Hidden within the attic was a secret room. When frightening and unexplainable events lead Dana to discover the long lost key to this room, she accidentally unlocks a host of unimaginable horrors that reveal the house’s past is terrifyingly tied with her own.

I’m not entirely sure what the real story behind this one is just yet as it is all pretty vague at the moment, but I’ll definitely do some digging once we get more details.

  1. Isn’t Wentworth Miller the dude from Prison Break? This movie sounds awesome, got my attention at ‘the shining’ as planned, I’m sure lol

He certainly is! Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. No other reason to throw The Shining around like that unless you want people to perk up a little. Sounds cool though, that’s for sure.
