I knew it was only a matter of time before we saw Twentieth Century Fox’s retelling of Mary Shelley’s novella undergo a title change. Before it was simply known as Frankenstein, but now we can start calling it Victor Frankenstein. While it might not sound like much, the new title actually helps this movie out tremendously. Mainly, it will no longer be confused with yet another remake because the film isn’t so much about Victor Frankenstein and his monster as it is about Igor, his assistant.

We aren’t here just to talk about a new title, though, because with that name change comes the film’s official synopsis, giving us our first glimpse at the direction Chronicle scribe Max Landis decided to take his retelling of Mary Shelley’s iconic tale.

James McAvoy is Victor Von Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe stars as Igor in a unique, never-before-seen twist on Mary Shelley’s classic 19th century novel. Told from Igor’s perspective, we see the troubled young assistant’s dark origins, his redemptive friendship with the young medical student Victor Von Frankenstein, and become eyewitnesses to the emergence of how Frankenstein became the man—and the legend—we know today.

This is all pretty fantastic news. A Frankenstein story told from an entirely new perspective gives this film an edge that will hopefully expand Shelley’s world into uncharted territory, providing us with a new outlook on one of the genre’s oldest of creations. The sky is the limit for director Paul McGuigan who has a solid chance at delivering a film that shines a new light on one of the classics. I think they’re onto something with this one, folks.

Daniel Radcliffe stars alongside Adam Scott, Jessica Brown Findlay and James McAvoy. The film currently has an October 2, 2015 release.
