Mike Flanagan made some serious noise amongst the horror community back in April with the release of Oculus (read my review here), proving that he’s a horror director worth keeping an eye on. Now we’ll get to see the director take on one of the biggest voices the genre has to offer as he has been tapped to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.
Since the release of Oculus, Flanagan has been attached to a pretty wicked sounding supernatural thriller by the name of Diver, which was all about exploring the minds of the dead. That film has been put on the back burner so they can jump straight into Gerald’s Game, which is pretty exciting stuff because I’d love to see Flanagan’s vision of a Stephen King story—should make for a solid dose of horror!
Here’s what the book is about:
Gerald’s Game revolves around a seemingly harmless contest between a married couple in a remote retreat. It escalates to become a harrowing fight for survival and wife Jessie must confront long-buried demons within her own mind — and possibly lurking in the shadows of her seemingly empty house.
Flanagan scripted the adaptation with his writing partner Jeff Howard, so it will be interesting to see how close they stick with King’s pages when this one hits the screen. After Absentia and Oculus – I’m game! I haven’t read the book…
I’ve been reading a lot of King’s books lately, but of course I haven’t gotten to this one yet. I’ve heard great things though. Movie adaptations of King’s work are totally hit or miss, but they don’t always have a guy like Flanagan at the helm either so we’ll have to see how this one turns out. Hoping for the best!
I really don’t know, because at it’s heart, Gerald’s game is less horror and more psychological drama/thriller. Once you read it, you’ll understand what I mean.

Going to be very difficult to adapt faithfully, but I really hope they get the tone right as they change any details.
That’s what I’ve been hearing so far. I definitely need to read this one, I’m interested to see what kind of challenge Flanagan has ahead of himself.
This is gonna be a tough one to make into a movie – the book is really good, and I’m interested to see where they go with it.
That’s probably why it has taken so long for somebody to be brave enough to adapt this one to the big screen. Hopefully Flanagan can pull it off!

Not my favorite King novel …though I love almost all of them, just isn’t my favorite. One major lesson learned seems to be: never let your partner handcuff you to a bed for kinky sex in a remote location, especially when no-one knows where you are… even if it’s consensual. Oh yeah, and you should probably have a safe word.
They’ll need a really, really strong lead actress to pull this one off… and the script is going to take some finessing. Though Diver sounds more interesting to me, I’m curious to see how GG will go.
