Space plants grow on a director for The Day of the Triffids adaptation

The long talked about adaptation of the 1962 sci-fi classic The Day of the Triffids had sort of slipped out of existence for a while. The last we heard about this one was way back in 2012 and at the time Neil Cross had been given the nod to pen the screenplay, but other than that not a whole hell of a lot has happened with this one. Today, Deadline reported that not only is the film alive and well but they have found the right man for the job to bring this adaptation to life on the big screen once again.

That man is Mike Newell who has had his hand in a fair share of solid flicks like Donnie Brasco and The Constant Gardener. He also has plenty of experience with big-budget films that are heavy on CGI, so it’s no wonder he was given the reigns for this kind of flick which will undoubtedly use plenty of CG. It’s hard to say how this one will end up or what kind of tone it’s going to have but I’m just glad to see that it’s finally moving along again.

There’s no doubt plenty of potential with a film like this as long as the right people are involved so we’ll have to wait and see where it goes from here. With a high profile director like Newell at the helm though, there’s a really good chance that this flick is going to be pretty big. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Time will tell!

After a comet shower blinds most of the world’s population, those with sight must battle alien plants, known as triffids, bent on destroying mankind.

The film is being produced by Ghost House Pictures, Mark Gordon, Don Murphy, and Michael Preger, and Murphy’s Angry Films partner Susan Montford will be executive producer.

I enjoy life, living comes so naturally to me; its a precious gift like boobs… or rockets. I honestly believe that if you were ever attacked by a gorilla that you should just sit back and relax while you enjoy the once in a life time feeling of having each of your limbs ripped off.

Great novel. Read it when I was in High School. I like Newell, too. He’s a pretty solid director. Should be pretty good in his hands and if they stick to the source material. Good post!

Yea, I’m really looking forward to this one as well. I think Newell is definitely a great choice.
