Is this creepy viral footage a nod towards Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain series?

If you watched last night’s ridiculous mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, then there’s a good chance you witnessed a creepy commercial that AMC ran during the show. It was odd bit of found-footage featuring a swarm of rats gathering around a sewer drain and running through a government building, and it turns out that this could be the start of Guillermo del Toro’s viral campaign for his upcoming adaptation of The Strain which will hit FX in 2014.

The reason why this is most likely for The Strain is because in between the two shots featured in the commercial we see a very quick look at some text that reads “He is here” which was used in the books. Some are saying that this could be a viral campaign for Godzilla, which also sees a releases in 2014, but I think it’s safe to assume this is for The Strain as the rats and the phrase used in the commercial are a dead giveaway.

Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, Miguel Gomezand, Natalie Brown and most recently David Bradley will all star.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The Strain is scheduled to premiere in July of 2014 on FX.

I enjoy life, living comes so naturally to me; its a precious gift like boobs… or rockets. I honestly believe that if you were ever attacked by a gorilla that you should just sit back and relax while you enjoy the once in a life time feeling of having each of your limbs ripped off.

Yea, exactly! The potential here is crazy. Especially with del Toro so heavily involved in the adaptation. We should be in for a good one!

I LOVE The Strain Trilogy! I have been collecting the comics, have the novels and audio books. Ron Perlman is killer reading the first novel. Cannot wait! The Rats do play a big part as there is an exterminator named Vasliy in it and much of it takes place in the subways under NYC. Great post!

Glad you’re as excited as I am for this one Victor. I have only read the trilogy, but it was absolutely phenomenal and extremely dark—which is something that I hope translates over to the small screen. It’s shaping up quite nicely and outta be one hell of a show. Can’t wait!
