Hammer Films not only wants to revive The Abominable Snowman, but now they’ve directed their attention towards the 1974 classic Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter; and they’re eying none other than Kill List and Sightseer’s director Ben Wheatley (below) for the job. Wait a second… could Ben Wheatley be possibly directing a vampire flick? Read on!
Hammer CEO Simon Oakes recently spoke with Empire where he shared his enthusiasm for the remake, saying, “The thing about Kronos is that it’s one of those things where we need to find a way in. Brian Clemens wrote the first one saying he wanted to bring a modern take to the idea of the vampire hunter, and yet Kronos still wears tights! But the ambition and imagination at work in that film were what people responded to. People at Comic-Con always ask if we’re doing a new one, and I always say, ‘Yeah, we’re doing Kronos!’ and the blogosphere goes wild. So if we can find the right writer to reimagine it then that’s what we’ll do.”
He then goes on to say that he has already offered the project to Wheatley and that if he wants it, it’s his. “I’ve offered it to Ben Wheatley! I’ve told him Kronos is his whenever he wants it. You can put that in print! That might get him off his arse! [laughs] I’m a huge fan of Ben’s. I told him, ‘Whenever you want Kronos, it’s yours, mate. Just get back to me.’ And he never got back to me! So we’ll shame him in print into doing it now!”
Vampire hunter and expert swordsman Kronos finds himself in a small village where several of the local young women have been found in an advanced state of age, their youth drained from them by a vampire’s kiss. Kronos’ search leads him to the Durward estate where he is met by the effete children of the apparently aged and sick Lady Durward.
So it’s Wheatley’s if he wants it. I honestly can’t think of anything better than seeing Wheatley’s brutal brand of filmmaking being applied to a flick about hunting vampires. Let’s hope this happens! Right now he is gearing up to adapt JG Ballard’s High Rise, so maybe once that’s finished up he can work towards slaying some bloodsuckers!
Just FYI, I posted this article on Dreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1rm9hg/hammer_films_wants_ben_weatley_for_captain_kronos/). I like drumming up buzz.
Thanks, man. That’s always very much appreciated! This could be a good one, hopefully Wheatley will take the job!
Nah. It’s nothing. If it works out well, I get a good Dreddit rep and you get more views. If not, no one really loses.
And agreed, I hope the film pleases and does justice to its legacy.
