FilmDistrict has released the first official theatrical one-sheet for Spike Lee’s Oldboy and it’s bizarre to say the least. While I’m still not totally sure how I feel about this poster, I do love the tagline, “Ask not why you were imprisoned. Ask why you were set free.”
The poster is actually a shot from the film itself and a nod to the red-band trailer which is apparently on its way Wednesday. The title treatment is Josh Borlin’s actual handwriting, which was inspired by the handwritten letters his character writes to his daughter in the film. The poster is a nice little taste of the flick but the trailer should tell us a lot more when we see it in just a couple of days.
Oldboy is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.
The film stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley.
Cannot wait. I’m increasingly more and more optimistic about this.
Yea man I can’t wait either. It’s not going to touch the original but it could still be one hell of a film. Hopefully the trailer on Wed will get a lot more people on board.
It doesn’t look like a movie poster. It looks like the box is photoshopped onto the outside shot, or something; but nonetheless I am hoping this movie will be good. Looking forward to the trailer.
It’s an actual shot from the film and we’ll probably see it in the trailer as well so it’s definitely not photoshopped. It’s an odd style for a poster though, definitely different.
It could be CGI; if you look at the chest box and Josh Brolin notice how there’s no outside light reflecting off of them; the box looks like it’s indoors. But, it’s not a big deal, either way. Just an observation.

Sooo…another Asian film they “had” to remake, huh? Well, Josh Brolin was a good pick anyway….
Yea, Brolin is a solid choice for sure. I remember reading an interview with Brolin where he said that he made sure he got Park Chan-wook’s blessing before he signed on for the film because if he would have said “no” then he wouldn’t have done the film. Very cool.

As an aside, Brolin scared the shit out of me in Planet Terror. He does psycho really well. lol

Why does this have to be remade in the first place? I’m confused. Especially by Spike Lee.
Eventually every movie we love will be remade. All we can hope for is that they turn out decent! Spike Lee is an odd choice but the entire cast is pretty much amazing, we’ll know a lot more once we see a trailer.
